Katie Lister, LMSW

As human beings in 2024, I believe we are all collectively experiencing some degree of grief and trauma. Perhaps you are struggling with the lingering stress of a global pandemic, grief and loss, the political climate, or the weight of personal life stressors and circumstances. Many people have been expending all of their emotional (and physical) energy on "keeping it together" and just surviving.

I provide virtual (telehealth) therapy sessions to clients throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Vermont. I work primarily with women struggling with anxiety, panic, trauma, grief/loss, life transitions, or relationship stressors. Many of my clients are also college students or in caregiving professions (healthcare professionals, social workers, therapists, teachers, etc).

Common themes that might come up in therapy include perfectionism, burnout, how stress/anxiety manifest in the body and how to manage it, critical self-talk, desire to improve communication and relationships.

My goal is to offer a safe space for you to slow down, breathe, and be heard. As a therapist, I have the privilege of witnessing the resiliency of the human spirit and the power of the human brain. I will walk alongside you through this journey. I will listen. I will also encourage growth, healing, and emotional development, at your pace.

I believe in equity, equality, and justice for all. You will be welcomed here and safe to be yourself regardless of gender, sexuality, race, size, and relationship structure. I approach life, and therapy, from a trauma-informed, social justice, LGBTQ+ affirming, and anti-racist lens.

Since graduating with my MSW in 2007, I have gained experience working in Psychiatric Hospitals, Partial Outpatient Programs, group therapy at the University of Michigan Depression Center, and in many hospital units (including Emergency Departments, Labor & Delivery, NICU, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Trauma/Burn, and Ambulatory Care). Since 2009 I have also worked with clients in outpatient/private practice settings, which is my true passion, and where I have focused my career exclusively since 2014.

In March of 2020, I transitioned my practice to be 100% virtual, which allows me to meet with clients outside of my local area. It also allows clients the flexibility to meet during lunch breaks or their children’s nap time without having to factor in drive time or childcare. The response to virtual therapy has been overwhelmingly positive.

When not working with clients, I love traveling, exploring outdoors, spending time with my husband and our two kids, and hanging out with our two rescue dogs.
